  • Freezing of the screen
  • Constant Crashing of the display
  • Flickering on screen
  • Displaying Error Message
  • Poor Graphics Display

Different Methods to Reset Graphics Driver

The Chromebook is a bit different compared to other laptops and desktops. The operating system is different, and you no longer use a Windows device. That is why resetting the graphics driver will also slightly differ from other devices.

We have discussed a few of the methods that will work. You need to follow the steps we have shared.

Using Task Manager

Resetting the Graphics Driver from the device task manager is very easy. The steps are very minimal and straightforward. We have listed them below. Just follow them accurately.

  • Press your device’s Shift, Ctrl and Esc buttons to open the task management.
  • On the new window that opens, click the Processes Tab.
  • A list will appear on the screen. Scroll down that screen until you reach the Background Processes section.
  • Look for the AMD or Nvidia processes. One of these will be there, depending on your graphics card.
  • Click on the respective processes and tap the End Task button.

Disable and Enable the Graphics Driver

Your Graphics Driver gets restarted if you disable it and then enable it once on your Chromebook. The steps are a bit longer but very simple to do.

  • Open the device manager on your Chromebook.
  • From the menu, look for the display adapter and click on the bracket next to it to display the Graphic drivers of your device.
  • Right-click on the Graphics driver and select the disable driver option.
  • If you have two drivers, your screen will flicker, or your system will be turned off.
  • After making these changes, restart your Chromebook if it hasn’t been turned off.
  • Turn on your device and then go to the Device Manager once again.
  • Go to the same Graphics Driver that you have just disabled and right-click on it once again.
  • Select the Enable Driver option this time, and your Graphics Driver will be reset and enabled again.

Uninstall and Reinstall the Graphics Driver

If disabling and enabling the Graphics Driver doesn’t work, you might need to uninstall and reinstall it. The steps are pretty much similar to the disabling method.

  • Open the device manager on your device and go to the display adapter option.
  • Right-click on the Graphics Driver, and select the uninstall driver option from the menu that appears.
  • An uninstall screen will appear. Just allow the permissions and uninstall the display driver.
  • After the uninstallation, restart your device.
  • When the device restarts, the display driver will be reinstalled.

Resetting of Chromebook Hardware

All the methods we have shared above can potentially solve the display problem you are having on your Chromebook. However, if none of these methods work, you might need a complete hardware reset on your Chromebook.

  • First, turn off your Chromebook.
  • Now press and hold the Refresh and Power buttons.
  • When you see the Chromebook starting, release the refresh button but keep holding the power button.
  • Finally, the power button is released when the Chromebook is turned on.

Bottom Line

Resetting graphics drivers or Chromebook hardware is one solution to your display problems. However, if your device has some technical or hardware issues, these might not work. If you still have display issues after the reset, the device might need a repair.
